A Safe Place for Meow is a 100% volunteer-run cat rescue based in Palmerston, Northern Territory.
We support cats across Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding NT communities, helping those who need care, safety and a chance at a better life.
Our rescue is made up of everyday people who love cats. Foster carers, coordinators, board members, fundraising volunteers and supporters, all giving their time around work, families and everyday life.
Most of our cats are cared for in loving foster homes, where they can settle, feel safe and show us who they really are before finding their forever families.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple goal: to give cats in need the care, safety and second chance they deserve.

A Safe Place for Meow helps cats who need care, safety and a chance at a better life.
We take cats into care, arrange vet checks, desexing, vaccinations, microchipping and parasite treatment, and place them with foster carers where they can settle in a safe home environment.
While in care, we get to know each cat’s personality, needs and behaviour, so we can help match them with the right family when they are ready for adoption.
We also support adopters with advice around settling in, indoor living, introductions and long-term care, helping each cat have the best chance of a happy, secure future.
Behind the scenes, our volunteers help with fostering, transport, fundraising, events, administration, adoption days and community support. Every role matters, and every bit of help makes a difference.
A Safe Place for Meow began when it became clear that more support was needed for cats in our community.
Local rescues were already at capacity, and vets were seeing a steady number of stray and vulnerable cats coming through with limited options for placement.
In response, a small group of people came together to create additional capacity, building a rescue that could support the growing need.
From the beginning, the focus was on foster-based care, placing cats into safe, home environments rather than a traditional shelter.
Over time, that approach has grown into a strong, community-driven network.
Today, we are a fully volunteer-run organisation, supported by everyday people who give their time to help cats in need.
We also work closely with local vets and other rescue organisations across Darwin and surrounding NT communities, because collaboration is an important part of making this work sustainable.

You might hear us call it the shelter, but our Palmerston space is best described as our adoption centre.
A Safe Place for Meow is a foster-based rescue. This means our cats do not live long term in a shelter environment. Most are cared for in foster homes, where they can settle, recover and show their true personalities while they wait for adoption.
Our adoption centre supports the work happening behind the scenes. It gives us a place to welcome cats into care, complete initial checks, prepare for adoption days and connect them with their future families.
It is not a place where cats are housed long term. It is a safe, practical space that helps us rescue, care for and rehome cats across Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding NT communities.

Our mission is simple.
We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cats in need, while supporting our community through education, responsible cat care and practical support.
Every cat that comes into our care is treated as an individual. We focus on their health, safety and wellbeing, then help them find the right home when they are ready.
Through foster care, adoption support and community education, we work toward better outcomes for cats across Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding NT communities.
At the heart of it all is one goal: to give cats in need the care, safety and second chance they deserve.
Our impact goes beyond the number of cats we rescue.
Every cat that comes into our care is desexed, treated and supported, helping to reduce unwanted litters and break the cycle over time.
By placing cats into safe foster homes and promoting indoor living, we are not only improving outcomes for each cat, but also helping to protect local wildlife and reduce the number of cats living on the streets.
We also work closely with our community to encourage responsible cat ownership, microchipping and long-term care, supporting better outcomes for both cats and the environment.
It is steady, ongoing work, but it makes a real difference.
A Safe Place for Meow is run entirely by volunteers who also have jobs, families, and of course, cats of their own. Because of this, we aren’t always available to take calls. The quickest way to reach us is by email or through our social media pages, and one of our volunteers will get back to you as soon as possible.
We only accept surrenders for cats that were originally adopted from us. If your cat was adopted through A Safe Place for Meow, feel free to reach out to us. Our main focus is rescuing and rehoming stray cats, and as a small volunteer-run rescue, our spaces are very limited. If your cat wasn’t adopted from us, there are other local rescues you can reach out to who may be able to help.
We’re not able to take in found cats. If you’ve found a cat, your first point of call is to contact your local vet to check for a microchip, this is the quickest way to reunite them with their family if they have one. From there, the vet will be able to guide you on the next steps, and many clinics work closely with local rescues on rehoming if needed.
